Earn your comprehensive Coral Restoration Full Certificate by completing our weekly, specialized modules. You have the flexibility to take all modules at once or complete them individually until you achieve the full certification.

This course is designed for people that want to work anywhere around the world on coral reef restoration projects. It provides you with critical knowledge to maximize the success of your projects based on our 25 years of experience raising corals, so you can contribute to marine conservation and make a difference!

This is a complete professional training course with in depth class sessions, followed by practical sessions underwater. You will gain hands-on experience, learn to identify a wide range of corals and their specific ecological niches to decide which species to use, then learn how to choose a coral restoration site properly.

You will be exposed to the various coral restoration techniques used all around the world – from small coral reef fixes to massive planting. We will then go through tools like monitoring using techniques like Rapid Reef Assessment technique to 3D Photogrammetry to maximize the survival of your coral plantings.

We also try to get international guest speakers from the coral industry, so students get some additional exposure and get to network and make some good contacts with professionals in this field through online workshops. Refer to the curriculum for a more detailed breakdown.

Bali Course
For the Bali course, we will move to view various reefs with varying conditions in Amed, Tulamben and Nusa Penida. We can help arrange for accommodations and transport.

Raja Ampat Course
Our August intake will be conducted in the beautiful pristine reefs of Raja Ampat in eastern Indonesia. You will live-aboard the coral research vessel Galaxea of our partners Sea People. You have the options for full board with shared cabins, or a cabin for yourself. As we will be sailing around, this intake cannot be taken by modules.

Scholarships are available for Indonesian citizens to take this course.

Prerequisites
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Marine Science, Biology, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, or a related discipline is recommended, but not mandatory.
  • Minimum Advanced Diver certification, with at least 50 dives)
  • Good buoyancy skills are a must

Week 1 – Coral Biology and Identificaton

Introduction to coral biology, differences between hard and soft corals, differences between Small and Large polyps Hard corals, and different colony shapes

Week 2 – Coral Nursery Management

Focuses on coral gardening and the importance of on-going coral nursery management. We will review the various coral predators, pests and threats to a coral nursery that you should look our for to maximize the success of your coral nursery.

Week 3 – Reef Restoration Techniques

We will explore a variety of techniques, analyzing their unique pros, cons, and appropriate application scenarios. You will then have an extensive opportunity to practice deploying each method in detail.

Week 4 – Reef Monitoring Techniques

Gain proficiency in essential monitoring techniques for tracking restoration progress. The module will cover methods like Rapid Reef Assessment (RRA), Photogrammetry, and Quadrant Transects, giving you the tools needed to accurately determine site health.
