Rip Curl School of Surf partners with Ocean Gardener in Sanur, Bali

With our vision to expand coral nurseries across Indonesia through partnerships with resorts and dive shops, Ocean Gardener is proud to announce our collaborative partnership with Rip Curl, the Rip Curl School of Surf and the Prama Sanur Beach Hotel. This initiative marks the establishment of an Ocean Gardener coral nursery in Sanur, located in front of the Rip Curl School of Surf and the Prama Sanur Beach Hotel.

This project will be a key initiative for Prama Sanur Beach Hotel and Rip Curl’s social and environmental responsibility efforts in Indonesia.

In a collaborative effort, the Prama Sanur Beach Hotel, Rip Curl, and the Rip Curl School of Surf are joining forces with local hotels, resorts, dive centers, and schools in Bali. Their mission is to educate both the community and tourists on the vital role of coral reefs and the necessity of restoration projects in Sanur. These initiatives will not only help rebuild reef fish populations but also provide crucial natural defenses against the annual storm surges that erode Sanur’s beaches.

What is sustainable coral farming?

Sustainable coral farming is rooted in ecological principles, emphasizing the cultivation of appropriate coral species within their optimal environments. By providing a sustainable income source through ocean gardening, mirroring traditional agriculture, coral farming empowers coastal communities to become stewards of their marine ecosystems. The harvested corals are then utilized for reef rehabilitation, effectively restoring damaged areas, and for the responsible provision of live aquarium specimens

It fosters an industry that supports conservation rather than destructive fishing methods, such as dynamite fishing or cyanide fish collection, which decimate reefs and undermine long-term coastal livelihoods. Shifting towards regenerative practices like coral farming is vital for safeguarding both the ecological integrity of coral reefs and the economic well-being of the communities that depend on them.

Our combined impact

Ocean Gardener projects support the livelihoods of thousands of Indonesian coastal families by partnering with village cooperatives and fishermen’s associations. These initiatives drive income generation while simultaneously preserving and restoring local reefs. Having successfully planted tens of thousands of corals, we aim to accelerate restoration efforts by implementing diverse methods tailored to specific environments and coral species.

Please come visit this project if you are in Bali and have half a day to come to Sanur. You can book a tour with the local community so you can see this project in action. All proceeds go towards coral restoration and supporting the local community.
