THANK YOU FOR
YOUR SUPPORT
Your on-going donations help us scale our programs and make more impact!
We extend a huge thank you to all donors for their invaluable contributions to coral restoration. Every donation empowers us to scale and expand our partner networks to train more local communities, find more hotels and resorts to host coral nurseries and restoration sites, work with local communities to foster community awareness about reef conservation and scientific research to help find ways to maximize coral reproduction and biodiversity to give them a fighting chance against the threats of climate change. If you wish to sponsor a partner site, please contact us.

Only One is a non-profit environmental organization that focuses on running advocacy campaigns to drive policy change for the ocean and climate. They specialize in strategic communications, movement building, and public advocacy. They also work to build a global network of advocates to take action on these campaigns. We are one of the partners that they work with and donate to.

As a program of Sustainable Surf, a nonprofit focused on transforming surf culture into a force for sustainability, Seatrees evolved as the organization’s flagship program to directly support ocean health. Their team worked with Ocean Gardeners to restore coral reefs and mangrove forest on the island of Nusa Penida, Bali, Indonesia.

MERO Foundation stands for “Marine Education & Research Organisation“. Their vision is to become a center of marine science and tourism based on eco-friendly environment and conservation. They generously sponsor scholarships for students to take the coral restoration courses.

Founded in 2016, the McPike-Zima Foundation provides philanthropic support to help organizations meet ambitious goals. They bring a business mindset to funding decisions, evaluating an organization’s potential impact and ability to attain long-term effectiveness. We are one of the greateful local organizations selected to be funded by them.

Empowering local partners to safeguard their reefs
Leveraging our 25 years of coral growing experience for success
Our History
With the 1997-1998 economic crisis, the people of Indonesia and their coastal communities suffered considerable loss of income. Vincent Chalias, a marine biologist with an aquaculture background, saw the opportunity to transform the tropical marine aquarium industry from collecting wild live corals, to a farm-based one whilst giving these coastal communities another form of income. He came up with the idea to mariculture these corals, so they no longer need to be taken from the reef. Also, these farmed corals can be used to replant and restore damaged reefs.
He found in Mr Manumudhita a great partner and inspiration. Mr Manumudhita, after working for many years as the Director of the Fisheries Department, retired and became the head of the Bali Fishermen Associations, helping defend the livelihood of fishermen all over the country. The first trial was in Nusa Dua in 2000. Since then, many more nurseries have been installed in many corners of Bali, as well as other islands of Indonesia. growing almost any possible coral species.
In 2018, Ocean Gardener was created as a non-profit dedicated to coral education and coral reef restoration. The first line of work was education. We created educational material for different communities to help increase knowledge and understanding of corals. Next, coral nurseries were started in Candidasa, Sanur, Lipah, Ped and Bangka. Also, different reef restoration projects were started.
With Vincent’s 25 years of expereince in commercial coral farming, the projects quickly showed good results. Our list of nurseries, coral restoration projects and trained people to maintain and garden their reef keeps growing.
Our philosophy
The Ocean Gardener Team
We are a team of marine biologists, professional divers, coral farmers, conservationists and students, dedicated to educating as many people as possible about the coral reefs and their importance. We believe that without proper coral education, reefs can’t be properly protected.
